Notes : Blessed [[Happy] are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness…
hunger and thirst: These are people who are in desperate need. To link hunger and thrist for the same person shows how intense is their longing to be satisfied.
Everyone now and then does what is right, but Jesus is pointing his hearers not to occasional acts but to a Passionate concern for the right.

Righteousness  is often used in the New testament for the right standing of believers before God because of Christ’s atoning Work, but this is often said to be a Pauline concept rather a one that Matthew sets forth….. Specifically we should notice that he is not suggesting that people can make a strong effort and achieve the righteousness of which he is writing: it is a given righteousness, not an achieved righteousness. The Blessed do not achieve it but hunger and thirst for it. The Gospel according to Matthew. Leon Morris  PNTC p.99

righteousness δικαιοσύνη dikaiosunē

1a) the doctrine concerning the way in which man may attain a state approved of God

Righteousness Revealed in Romans.

Rom 1:17  For in the Good News a righteousness which comes from God is being revealed, depending on faith and tending to produce faith; as the Scripture has it, "THE RIGHTEOUS MAN SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." WNT
Note: You receive this righteousness by Faith it cannot be achieved or merited.
This smacks all self-effort in the face.

Rom 3:21  But now a righteousness coming from God has been brought to light apart from any Law, both Law and Prophets bearing witness to it--
Rom 3:22  a righteousness coming from God, which depends on faith in Jesus Christ and extends to all who believe. No distinction is made;
Rom 3:23  for all alike have sinned, and all consciously come short of the glory of God,
Note: a righteousness coming from God, which depends on faith in Jesus Christ. If we are sinners everyone of us then the only way that we can be righteous is if we are declared righteous by God and free from Guilt because of our faith in Jesus Christ.

Rom 3:25  He it is whom God put forward as a Mercy-seat, Propitiation ; appeasing offering} rendered efficacious through faith in His blood, in order to demonstrate His righteousness-- because of the passing over, in God's forbearance, of the sins previously committed--
Rom 3:26  with a view to demonstrating, at the present time, His righteousness, that He may be shown to be righteous Himself, and the giver of righteousness to those who believe in Jesus.

Rom 4:3  For what says the Scripture? "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND THIS WAS PLACED TO HIS CREDIT AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."

Rom 4:5  whereas in the case of a man who pleads no actions of his own, but simply believes in Him who declares the ungodly free from guilt, his faith is placed to his credit as righteousness.
Rom 4:6  In this way David also tells of the blessedness of the man to whose credit God places righteousness, apart from his actions.
Rom 4:7  "BLESSED," he says, "ARE THOSE WHOSE INIQUITIES HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED OVER.
Rom 4:8  BLESSED IS THE MAN OF WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE ACCOUNT."
Rom 4:9  This declaration of blessedness, then, does it come simply to the circumcised, or to the uncircumcised as well? For ABRAHAM'S FAITH --so we affirm--WAS PLACED TO HIS CREDIT AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Rom 5:17  For if, through the transgression of the one individual, Death made use of the one individual to seize the sovereignty, all the more shall those who receive God's overflowing grace and gift of righteousness reign as kings in Life through the one individual, Jesus Christ.

Rom 5:21  in order that as sin has exercised kingly sway in inflicting death, so grace, too, may exercise kingly sway in bestowing a righteousness which results in the Life of the Ages through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 6:12  Let not Sin therefore reign as king in your mortal bodies, causing you to be in subjection to their cravings;
Rom 6:13  and no longer lend your faculties as unrighteous weapons for Sin to use. On the contrary surrender your very selves to God as living men who have risen from the dead, and surrender your several faculties to God, to be used as weapons to maintain the right.
Rom 6:14  For Sin shall not be lord over you, since you are subjects not of Law, but of grace.
For they shall be filled; KJV for they shall be completely satisfied. WNT.
Notes:
They will be surely filled with His righteousness .
Mat 6:33  But make His Kingdom and righteousness your chief aim, and then these things shall all be given you in addition.
Seek first of all His Kingdom and His righteousness.
So that God will outwork his righteousness in us so that we not only will we be in right standing with God, but also we will DO Righteous acts. We are Expected to live in full accord with the Will of God. Leon Morris p.99
God gives His Gift of Righteousness to those who ask Him.
