Introduction.

When Jesus chose the twelve He did not choose Supermen but very ordinary men. They were not outstanding. Jesus does not need supermen to do His Work.

But this Judas is a different story. Why would Jesus make Him the treasurer. Did Jesus know that this would be the betrayer? Jesus knew he was a thief. He had his hand in the bag, for himself.

This whole episode was fulfilling the type laid down by Joseph in the OT when He was sold to the Ishmaelite traders for 20 shekels of silver who took him to Egypt for sale.

Mat 26:14  At that time one of the Twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the High Priests
Notes
To think that after nearly three years with Jesus as one  of His Disciples who had seen the Miracles, the Signs and wonders; he had heard the teaching 24/7 and seen the Love of God lived out before his very eyes could do such a thing as betray the Son of Man.

Even today there are such men alive who cannot be trusted. They are evil incarnate, they are unreliable unfaithful, and malicious. There may be a Judas in your sphere.
God is Bigger than any Judas you encounter
This Judas went the the High Priests because he was one in nature with them who were controlled by the devil. Birds of a feather……

How amazing that Jesus would trust this man and allow him to follow through on his evil plan? For reasons why Judas would chose such a path see Leon Morris. p651

Jesus the man of Peace was not about to do a military style takeover from the Roman and set up some world kingdom.

Mat 26:15  and said, "What are you willing to give me if I betray him to you?" So they weighed out to him thirty shekels,

"What are you willing to give me if I betray him to you?"
What sort of an individual would attempt such a thing?
Dont be Obsessed with MONEY

This guy was obsessed with money. If he could not get it from the Very Expensive Alabaster Box in the previous section then he would get some other way.

Obsession with anything is dangerous. These people are extremists, out of balance and heading for a quick and easy exit from this life.
Shortly after Jesus arrest Judas sees that he has done the wrong thing and takes the money back and throws it into the Temple. It cannot be accepted there as it is blood money. Matthew 27: 3-5. With that money they bought the potter’s field to bury strangers and aliens in.

Mat 26:16  and from that moment he was on the lookout for an opportunity to betray Him.
Notes
from that moment
That was a Critical Moment. Now Judas was committed to the betrayal. All that remained was to find the best time for it.
from that moment he was on the lookout for an opportunity to betray Him.

He was on the lookout.. Continuous imperfect tense meaning he was continually looking for the right opportunity,, a convenient time for his task.  The wrong time could have provoked a riot with incalculable consequences. The Chief Priests wanted it all done quietly when Jesus was away from the supporting crowds. L.M. p. 652
