Mat 17:22 As they were travelling about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
Mat 17:23 they will put Him to death, but on the third day He will be raised to life again." And they were exceedingly distressed.
Introduction
Matthew has already recorded twice Jesus Prediction that He will be killed in Jerusalem and once that He will rise from the dead.
Mat 16:21 From this time Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer much cruelty from the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised to life again.
Mat 17:12 But I tell you that he has already come, and they did not recognize him, but dealt with him as they chose. And before long the Son of Man will be treated by them in a similar way."
Now he has another such prophecy, but this time He spoke in the context of his ministering in Galilee.

Mat 17:22 As they were travelling about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
Notes
As they were travelling about in Galilee, Jesus said to them,
This was Jesus home region. As the time for His Crucifixion was approaching He stayed in Galilee where it was more secure. Joh 7:1 After this Jesus moved from place to place in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking an opportunity to kill Him. WNT
Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
He knew exactly who should betray Him yet he did not expose him until the right time; at the Last Supper. It was Judas Iscariot.
Mat 17:23 they will put Him to death, but on the third day He will be raised to life again." And they were exceedingly distressed.
Notes
Jesus knew that he had come to give His life to ransom us to God. John the Baptist called Him the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the whole world. The whole of the Old Testament pointed to the Coming of One who would crush Satan's head. Genesis 3:15. His life was to be a fulfillment of the Types of the Old Testament sacrifices and the Priestly Office as a Priest after the Order of Melchizedek.
Gen_14:18 And Melchizedek the king of Salem brought forth bread and wine. And he was the priest of the most high God.
Psa_110:4 Jehovah has sworn, and will not repent, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Heb_5:6 As He says also in another place, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."
Heb_5:10 being called by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek;
but on the third day He will be raised to life again."
This was typified by Jonah being three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish. He knew that he would rise again. Here are some O.T. Scriptures speaking of His Resurrection.
Psa_16:10 For You will not leave My soul in hell; You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
This Scripture was used on the Day Of Pentecost by Peter to say that Christ would rise from the dead. Act_2:27 because You will not leave My soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your holy One to see corruption.
See corruption - All human beings see corruption, because born in sin, and liable to the curse. The human body of Jesus Christ, as being without sin, saw no corruption. A.C.
Jesus knew of His Resurrection but the cruel road of Calvary and crucifixion lay ahead of of Him and He spoke to His Disciples continuously about this but they did not understand.
And they were exceedingly distressed. WNT
They Grieved exceedingly MKJV
They were exceeding sorry - Since the conversation on the mount, with Moses and Elijah; Peter, James, and John could have no doubt that their Lord and Master must suffer, and that it was for this end he came into the world; but, while they submitted to the counsel of God, their affection for him caused them to feel exquisite distress. G3076 λυπέω lupeō
Thayer Definition: 1) to make sorrowful 2) to affect with sadness, cause grief, to throw into sorrow 3) to grieve, offend 4) to make one uneasy, cause him a scruple Part of Speech: verb
Matthew Henry says, “How the disciples received this; They were exceedingly sorry. Herein appeared their love to their Master's person, but with all their ignorance and mistake concerning his undertaking. Peter indeed durst not say any thing against it, as he had done before (Mat_16:22), having then been severely rebuked for it; but he, and the rest of them, greatly lamented it, as it would be their own loss, their Master's grief, and the sin and ruin of them that did it.”
How would it feel if your best friend or your teacher should tell they are about to be murdered. It would be very distressing to say the least. Jesus tried to prepare them for what was coming soon but they just could not grasp the whole Catastrophe as they say it. The resurrection did not even enter their minds.
