Matthew 13 : 1 - 23 The Parable of the Sower.

The Manner in which the Word of God Penetrates the Heart and Produces a harvest.
Mat 13:1  In that day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside.
Mat 13:2  And great crowds were gathered to Him, so that He went into a boat and sat. And all the crowd stood on the shore.
Mat 13:3  And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow.
Mat 13:4  And as he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured them.
Mat 13:5  Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth. And they sprang up immediately, because they had no deepness of earth.
Mat 13:6  And the sun rising, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away.
Mat 13:7  And some fell among thorns. And the thorns sprung up and choked them.
Mat 13:8  And some fell on the good ground and yielded fruit, indeed one a hundredfold, and one sixty, and one thirty.
Mat 13:9  He who has ears to hear, let him hear. MKJV

Introduction. The manner in which the Word of God penetrates the Heart and Produces a Harvest.

There are Four kinds of Soil which represent Four Kinds of People

Mat 13:1  That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake,
Mat 13:2  when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore.
Notes
That same day,  …..the day mentioned in chapter 12 when he had healed the man with the withered hand on the Sabbath and the Pharisees had said that He casts out demons with Beezebub, the Prince of demons. and he had answered them. He had spoken of the Sign of the prophet Jonah, three days and three night in the belly of the earth meaning he would rise again.
And the day when His Mother and Brothers had come to him demanding his attention and He had said that tyhose who do the will of His Father are closer related to Him. That Very day he went out to the shore of the Lake near Capernaum.
Jesus Teaching from the Boat on the Lake of Galilee
Mat 13:2  when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him.
Jesus was being swamped with people crowding around him as he was sitting beside the Sea of Galilee. Crowd control was necessary so that His teaching could have impact.
He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore.
A good teacher always chooses the most advantageous position to get his message over to the crowd.
Few spectacles could be more interesting than a vast crowd on the hanks of a smooth and tranquil sea - an emblem of his instructions - and the Son of God addressing them on the great interests of eternity. Barnes
Mat 13:3  He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow.

He then spoke many things to them in figurative language.WNT
And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow. MKJV
Barnes The word “parable” is derived from a Greek word signifying “to compare together,” and denotes a similitude taken from a natural object to illustrate a spiritual or moral subject. It is a narrative of some fictitious or real event, in order to illustrate more clearly some truth that the speaker wished to communicate. Parable :[An earthy story or example with a heavenly meaning]
The Sower went out to sow

The “design” of speaking in parables was the following:
1. To convey truth in a more interesting manner to the mind, adding to the truth conveyed the beauty of a lovely image or narrative.
2. To teach spiritual truth so as to arrest the attention of ignorant people, making an appeal to them through the “senses.”
3. To convey some offensive truth, some pointed personal rebuke. in such a way as to bring it “home” to the conscience. Of this kind was the parable which Nathan delivered to David 2Sa_12:1-7, and many of our Saviour’s parables addressed to the Jews.
4. To “conceal” from one part of his audience truths which he intended others should understand. Thus Christ often, by this means, delivered truths to his disciples in the presence of the Jews, which he well knew the Jews would not understand; truths pertaining to them particularly, and which he was under no obligations to explain to the Jews. See Mar_4:33; Mat_13:13-16. Barnes

saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow. MKJV
The image here is taken from an employment known to all people, and therefore intelligible to all.
Nor can there be a more striking illustration of preaching the gospel than placing the seed in the ground, to spring up hereafter and bear fruit.

Mat 13:4  As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up.
Notes
Some seed falls on the Wayside. Meaning on a side path. The Seed could not penetrate the soil and the birds of the air came and pecked it up.

Mat 13:5  Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth;
Mat 13:6  but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up.

Notes
Some falls on rocky ground…. Shallow depth of soil.  Scorched by the sun and withers.

Mat 13:7  Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it.
Notes:
Some falls among the thorns which spring up and choke the plant.

Mat 13:8  But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty.
Notes
But a portion falls upon good ground

Mat 13:9  Listen, every one who has ears!" WNT
Notes
He who has ears to hear, let him hear. MKJV
Are you listening, you who have ears to hear.?

Mat 13:17  For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them.

Notes
Many prophets and righteous men ... - They wished to see the times of the Messiah.
They looked to it as a time when the hopes of the world would be fulfilled, and when the righteous would be happy, Joh_8:56. “Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.” Compare also 1Pe_1:10-12; Heb_11:13. So Isaiah and the prophets looked forward to the coming of the Messiah as the consummation of their wishes and the end of the prophecies, Rev_19:10. The object always dearest to the hearts of all righteous people is to witness the coming and advancement of the kingdom of Christ. Compare Rev_22:20.

Matthew 13:18 - 23 The Meaning of the Parable of the Sower.
Mat 13:18  "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower.
Mat 13:19  When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side.
Mat 13:20  He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy.
Mat 13:21  It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls.
Mat 13:22  He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful.
Mat 13:23  But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.")

Introduction

After telling the crowd the Parable of the Sower as he sat in a boat by the lake of Galilee, now he explains to the Disciples the meaning
He had given them the reasons for the Use of Instruction with Parables. Now he is privately explaining the sense to the Disciples in private.

Mat 13:18  "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower.
Notes
See also Mar_4:13-20; Luk_8:11-15. “Hear ye, therefore, the parable of the sower.KJV” That is, hear the “explanation” or the “spiritual meaning” of the narrative given before. Mark adds Mar_4:13, “Know ye not this parable? And how, then, shall ye know all parables?” By which it seems that the Saviour regarded this as one of the simplest and plainest of the parables, and gave an explanation of it that they might understand the general principles of interpreting others.
Barnes Notes

Mat 13:19  When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side.
Notes
Hear then ye the parable (humeis oun akousate tēn parabolēn). Jesus has given in Mat_13:13 one reason for his use of parables, the condemnation which the Pharisees have brought on themselves by their spiritual dulness: “Therefore I speak to them in parables” (dia touto en parabōlais antois lalō).
Cometh the evil one and snatcheth away (erchetai ho ponēros kai harpazei). The birds pick up the seeds while the sower sows. The devil is busy with his job of snatching or seizing like a bandit or rogue the word of the kingdom before it has time even to sprout. How quickly after the sermon the impression is gone. “This is he” (houtos estin). Matthew, like Mark, speaks of the people who hear the words as the seed itself. That creates some confusion in this condensed form of what Jesus actually said, but the real point is clear.
The seed sown in his heart (to esparmenon en tēi kardiāi autou, perfect passive participle of speirō, to sow) and “the man sown by the wayside” (ho para tēn hodon spareis, aorist passive participle, along the wayside) are identified. The seed in the heart is not of itself responsible, but the man who lets the devil snatch it away.RWP

He can go on preaching the mysteries of the kingdom without their comprehending what he is saying, but he is anxious that the disciples really get personal knowledge (gnōnai, Mat_13:11) of these same mysteries. So he explains in detail what he means to teach by the Parable of the Sower. He appeals to them (note position of hūmeis) to listen as he explains. RWP

Mat 13:20  He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy.
Notes
He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man ……..
