Matthew 12: 9 - 14 Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath 2

Jesus Heals the Man with the Withered Hand or arm
Mat 12:8  For the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath."
Mat 12:9  Departing thence He went to their synagogue,
Mat 12:10  where there was a man with a shrivelled arm. And they questioned Him, "Is it right to cure people on the Sabbath?" Their intention was to bring a charge against Him.
Mat 12:11  "Which of you is there," He replied, "who, if he has but a single sheep and it falls into a hole on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out?
Mat 12:12  Is not a man, however, far superior to a sheep? Therefore it is right to do good on the Sabbath."
Mat 12:13  Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your arm." And he stretched it out, and it was restored quite sound like the other.
Mat 12:14  But the Pharisees after leaving the synagogue consulted together against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Jesus heals the Man with the Shrivelled Hand

Introduction.

Jesus was unafraid to do the right and good thing on the Sabbath day even though the bigots and hypocrites were there to accuse Him. What Jesus did He did in the open for all to see. It was not hidden nor done in a corner. He demolished their religiosity and ridiculous regulations with one clear explanation and a  miracle.

Mat 12:8  For the Son of Man is the Lord of the Sabbath."
Notes
the Son of Man Mat 8:20  "Foxes have holes," replied Jesus, "and birds have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." This was Jesus favourite way of referring to Himself. It is used over  80 times in the New Testament and usually it comes from the lips of Jesus Himself.
Many think that it means just “man” but see how it was used in by Daniel  in

Dan 7:13  I saw in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him.
Dan 7:14  And dominion and glory was given Him, and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations and languages, should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Leon Morris says, ‘This points to someone especially close to god and thus has Messianic Significance.’
Why did Jesus call Himself the SON OF MAN?
It was rarely used and the Jews understood it. It was Messianic and had divine overtones and thirdly it speaks of His association with the Redeemed People of God. See Leon Morris P. 201
Barnes Notes on the New Testament says:  ‘The phrase “The Son of Man” - אנשׁ בר  bar 'ĕnâsh - does not occur elsewhere in the Old Testament in such a connection, and with such a reference as it has here, though it is often found in the New, and is, in fact, the favourite term by which the Saviour designates Himself.’

is the Lord of the Sabbath. ( NEB. says Sovereign over the Sabbath).
Lord κύριος kurios Strongs koo'-ree-os
From κῦρος kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, that is, (as noun) controller; by implication Mr. (as a respectful title): - God, Lord, master, Sir.
Here Jesus is saying that the Son of Man has complete Authority over the Sabbath.
Here He is showing what Keeping the Sabbath really means.

Mat 12:9  Departing thence He went to their synagogue,
Mat 12:10  where there was a man with a shrivelled arm. And they questioned Him, "Is it right to cure people on the Sabbath?" Their intention was to bring a charge against Him.

Notes
Here Jesus is teaching about the right use of a Holy Day. It is a day on which deeds of Mercy and Kindness are not merely permitted but required. L.M. p.304
Mat 12:10  And behold, a man having a withered hand. And they asked Him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbaths? This so that they might accuse Him. MKJV
And behold, a man Matthew wants us to take note of this man and this incident. ‘LOOK, a man…’ This man’s withered hand  was stunted and twisted which was embarrassing and unsightly as well a disabling. The Opposition to Jesus and His Ministry of healing wanted to use this man to trap Jesus into breaking the Sabbath. Thus, they could accuse HIm. Don’t underestimate the subtle and evil schemes that men will go to to discredit the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word.
Notes
Jesus countered their question with His own question.
"Which of you is there," He replied, "who, if he has but a single sheep and it falls into a hole on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out?
Jesus showed them their Hypocrisy by their choice of circumstance to accuse Him.
The Jews were very protective of their animals and knew them all by name and called to them. Jesus knew this and said they would deliver their sheep but this man was far superior to their sheep.

Mat 12:13  Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your arm." And he stretched it out, and it was restored quite sound like the other.

Notes
Mat 12:13  Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your arm."
They had nothing to say for their evil plot was exposed so without further comment jesus command the man to stretch out his arm
Jesus word of command was a Word of healing and power.
it was restored quite sound like the other.WNT It was restored, whole as the other.MKJV
Whole: G5199 ὑγιής hugiēs Thayer Definition:
1) sound
1a) of a man who is sound in body
2) to make one whole, i.e. restore him to health

It is clear that the man’s hand was completely healed by Jesus.

Mat 12:14  But the Pharisees after leaving the synagogue consulted together against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Notes
But….Here we see the real opposition to Jesus. The Pharisees have set themselves in opposition to Jesus. After leaving the synagogue the consulted together plotting how they might murder Jesus.
The Pharisees ... held a council ... - Mark adds that the Herodians also took a part in this plot. They were probably a “political” party attached firmly to Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, tetrarch of Galilee. He was the same man who had imprisoned and beheaded John the Baptist, and to whom the Saviour, when arraigned, was sent by Pilate. See the notes at Luk_3:1. He was under Roman authority, and was a strong advocate of Roman power. All the friends of the family of Herod were opposed to Christ, and ever ready to join any plot against his life. They remembered, doubtless, the attempts of Herod the Great against him when he was the babe of Bethlehem, and they were stung with the memory of the escape of Jesus from his bloody hands. The attempt against him now, on the part of the Pharisees, was the effect of “envy.” They hated his popularity, they were losing their influence, and they therefore resolved to take him out of the way.Barnes
