MATTHEW 4:12 - 17 Jesus begins to Preach.

Mat 4:12  Now when Jesus heard that John was thrown into prison, He withdrew into Galilee,
Mat 4:13  and leaving Nazareth He went and settled at Capernaum, a town by the Lake on the frontiers of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Mat 4:14  in order that these words, spoken through the Prophet Isaiah, might be fulfilled,
Mat 4:15  "ZEBULUN'S LAND AND NAPHTALI'S LAND; THE ROAD BY THE LAKE; THE COUNTRY BEYOND THE JORDAN; GALILEE OF THE NATIONS!
Mat 4:16  THE PEOPLE WHO WERE DWELLING IN DARKNESS HAVE SEEN A BRILLIANT LIGHT; AND ON THOSE WHO WERE DWELLING IN THE REGION OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, ON THEM LIGHT HAS DAWNED."
Mat 4:17  From that time Jesus began to preach. "Repent," He said, "for the Kingdom of the Heavens is now close at hand."
John the Baptist preaching at the Jordan River

Before someone begins to preach the Word of God they need to experience Temptation and Testing  to see if their faith and call are genuine. Jesus was lead into temptation by the Holy Spirit. God will arrange the circumstances of our lives so that we can really know that we are ready. A sprinter does not test his speed only on the day of the race. No. he continually increases the pressure and the exercises and sprints so that he is ready and his muscles are taught, trim and terrific for the big race.
After the temptations in the Desert Now Jesus is ready to start His Public Ministry.

Mat 4:12  Now when Jesus heard that John was thrown into prison, He withdrew into Galilee,
Mat 4:13  and leaving Nazareth He went and settled at Capernaum, a town by the Lake on the frontiers of Zebulun and Naphtali,

How interesting that the Last Great Prophet of the OT era would be thrown into Prison before jesus began His ministry.
Jesus was beginning a new Dispensation, and New Kingdom based on different rules and principles. No longer obedience to the Law but Faith in the Messiah of God.

Mat 4:13  and leaving Nazareth He went and settled at Capernaum, a town by the Lake on the frontiers of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Capernaum:the field of repentance; city of comfort - Hitchcock
Eaton’s Bible Dictionary Nahum's town, a Galilean city frequently mentioned in the history of our Lord. It is not mentioned in the Old Testament. After our Lord's expulsion from Nazareth (Mat_4:13-16; Luke 4:16-31), Capernaum became his “own city.” It was the scene of many acts and incidents of his life (Mat_8:5, Mat_8:14, Mat_8:15; Mat_9:2-6, Mat_9:10-17; 15:1-20; Mar_1:32-34, etc.). The impenitence and unbelief of its inhabitants after the many evidences our Lord gave among them of the truth of his mission, brought down upon them a heavy denunciation of judgement (Mat_11:23).
Mat 11:23  And [woe to ] you, Capernaum, who are exalted to the heaven, shall be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works which have been done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Mat 11:24  But I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.

From his hometown to his new centre of ministry. From Nazareth He went to Capernaum by the Sea of Galilee.

Zebulun

The Blessings for them
Jacob's Blessing - Genesis 49:13
"Zebulun shall dwell toward the seashore; And he shall be a haven for ships, And his flank shall be toward Sidon."
Moses Blessing - Deuteronomy 33:18
"Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going forth."

Naphtali

Jacob's Blessing - Genesis 49:21
"Naphtali is a hind let loose, he gives beautiful words."
Moses Blessing - Deut. 33:23
"...'O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, and full of the blessing of the Lord, take possession of the sea and the south.' "

THE LAND ALLOTMENT
Of the 12 tribes of Israel, none received land more beautiful than this tribe. Their land has been called the "Garden of Palestine".
Their inheritance fell in the region of Galilee. Centered around the shores of the Sea of Galilee, this tribe possessed the most fertile and productive region in all of Canaan.A map of the Tribe of Naphtali.

3
Shepherds and farmers alike found the soil and vegetation of this area extremely fertile, and able to support large flocks and herds. The whole of the land is fed by hidden springs emanating from Mount Herman. This area is well watered by multiple sources; principally the Jordan River, the springs of Mt. Herman, and the Sea of Galilee.
Mount Herman is just 39 miles northeast of where the Jordan River runs into the Sea of Galilee. In antiquity, the mountains of Galilee bore the name the Mountains of Naphtali.
Their allotment was inherited after the conflict with the Canaanite forces at the Waters of Merom in Joshua 11. Along with this tribe, the tribes of Benjamin, Dan, Issachar, Simeon and Zebulun also received their allotments after this battle.
The Biblical description of the allotted land can be found in Joshua 19:32-39.
"The sixth lot fell to the sons of Naphtali; to the sons of Naphtali according to their families. And their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim and Adami-nekeb and Jabneel, as far as Lakkum; and it ended at the Jordan. Then the border turned westward to Anath-tabor, and proceeded from there to Hukkok; and it reached to Zebulun on the south and touched Asher on the west, and to Judah at the Jordan toward the east."
The first three verses identify the tribal borders, starting in the southern portion of the tribal allotment. As can be seen on the map, Heleph has not been positively identified. The tribe's border ran from Heleph, thought to have existed to the north of Mt. Tabor, east towards the "oak in Zaanannim".

This same phrase was used to describe the area Sisera, king Jabin of Hazor's military commander, fled to in the engagement with Deborah and Barak found in Judges 4. This landmark was apparently well known in ancient times, and bears similarity to the dwelling of Abraham in Genesis 13:18 at the "oaks of Mamre".
Zaanannim's location is not certain. However, based on the geography of the Biblical description of the war with Jabin and Sisera, it would seem this city was to the immediate south - southeast of the Sea of Galilee. This would place the city likely in-between Beth-shemesh and Jabneel. However, it has also been identified as lying north of Mt. Tabor, as indicated on the city map.
Wherever the city was located, Naphtali's border stopped at the Jordan River. The description starts with Heleph, and moves eastward, encountering the cities mentioned along the way, until the border reached the Jordan River. From Heleph, the border extended westward to Anath-tabor, a city just north of Mt. Tabor. From here, the border incorporated the village of Hukkok.

GALILEE OF THE NATIONS!
Galilee of the Gentiles - Galilee was divided into upper and lower Galilee. Upper Galilee was called Galilee of the Gentiles, because it was occupied chiefly by Gentiles. It was in the neighborhood of Tyre, Sidon, etc. The word “Gentiles” includes in the Scriptures all who are not Jews. It means the same as nations, or, as we should say, the pagan nations. Barnes
The Upper Galilee (Hebrew: הגליל העליון‎, HaGalil Ha'Elion) is a geographical-political term in use since the end of the Second Temple period, originally referring to a mountainous area overlapping the present northern Israel and southern Lebanon, its borders being the Litani river in the north, the Mediterranean Sea in the west, the Beit HaKerem valley and Lower Galilee in the south and the Jordan river and Hula Valley in the east.[1] Wikipedia

Mat 4:16  THE PEOPLE WHO WERE DWELLING IN DARKNESS HAVE SEEN A BRILLIANT LIGHT; AND ON THOSE WHO WERE DWELLING IN THE REGION OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH, ON THEM LIGHT HAS DAWNED."

Mat 4:16  the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned."

dwellingt in darkness.
Darkness and light
I. The deep darkness which envelops the world without the gospel. “Darkness “ and “the region of the shadow of death,” striking emblems of error, ignorance, sin, guilt, misery, danger.
1. The heathen world is in this darkness (Rom_1:18-32).
2. In the very midst of Christendom there is this darkness. Home heathenism, etc. The condition of all unregenerate men.B.I.
The people which sat in darkness - This is quoted from Isa_9:2, where, instead of sitting, the prophet used the word walked. The evangelist might on purpose change the term, to point out the increased misery of the state of these persons. Sitting in darkness expresses a greater degree of intellectual blindness, than walking in darkness does. In the time of Christ’s appearing, the people were in a much worse state than in the time of the prophet, which was nearly 700 years before; as, during all this period, they were growing more ignorant and sinful.
The region and shadow of death - These words are amazingly descriptive. A region of death - Death’s country, where, in a peculiar manner, Death lived, reigned, and triumphed, subjecting all the people to his sway.
Shadow of death - Σκια θανατου, used only here and in Luk_1:79, but often in the Old Covenant, where the Hebrew is צל מות  tsal maveth, It is not easy to enter fully into the ideal meaning of this term. As in the former clause, death is personified, so here. A shadow is that darkness cast upon a place by a body raised between it and the light or sun. Death is here represented as standing between the land above mentioned, and the light of life, or Sun of righteousness; in consequence of which, all the inhabitants were, involved in a continual cloud of intellectual darkness, misery, and sin. A.Clark

I. Some souls are in greater darkness than others.
1. The darkness of ignorance.
2. The darkness of error.
3. The gloom of discomfort and sorrow, attended with fear.
4. Hopelessness, “sat in darkness.”
5. In the region of death.
Have seen a Great Light..............the Light has dawned

imagesMatthew 4 :8-11 The Third Temptation of Jesus.Mat 4:8  Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms in the world and their glory. Mat 4:9  The devil said to him, "I will give you all this if you will bow down and worship me." Mat 4:10  Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan! Scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" Mat 4:11  Then the devil left him, and angels came to take care of him. GW

Notes:
280px-Hermonsnow.jpgWhere was this mountain? The only very high mountains in Israel is Mount Hermon. This was quite some journey of more than 100 kilometres

He showed Jesus all the Kingdoms of the world and their glory.
This must have been in vision. He is able to make us see things that he wants to show us by suggesting to the mind.

The Mount of Temptation is said to be the hill in the Judaean Desert where Jesus was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:8). The exact location is unknown and impossible to determine. It is generally identified with Mount Quarantania, Arabic name: Jabal al-Qarantal, a mountain approximately 366 metres (1,201 ft) high, towering from the northwest over the town of Jericho in the West Bank. According to the public domain Catholic Encyclopedia (1907-1914), Quarantania is "a limestone peak on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho".

Mat 4:9  The devil said to him, "I will give you all this if you will bow down and worship me."
Jesus knew that He would be given all the Kingdoms of this world as he is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He will reign on earth over every kingdom and man will acknowledge the H e is the King. Now the Devil offers Jesus these Kingdoms without the route to the cross. This was the easy way. The Devil often shows you the easy way out which is illegal or immoral. Don’t fall for his subtle suggestions.

Were these Kingdoms the Devils' to give?
No never! The earth is the Lord’s and its entirety.
Psa_24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
1Co_10:26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
The Devil is the god of the world, but he can never say that they belong to him to do as he pleases. They belong to Almighty GOD and He shall reign forever and forever.
if you will bow down and worship me."  The devil is looking for worshippers and he has many who have sold their souls to him and who are in bonage to the Prince of Darkness.

Mat 4:10  Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan! Scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
Jesus could command Satan to leave.
'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
Bow you soul in adoration only to the Lord your God.
7"Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours." 8Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'
Mat 4:11  Then the devil left him, and angels came to take care of him.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. – Psalm 19:1-2, NIV (emphasis added). -

Bless the Lord, 0 my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, 0 my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s Ps 103(vv.1-5).

The Second Temptation of Jesus in the roof of the temple

To prove His Divinity by testing God’s Promise.

The subject of CHRIST’S temptations, is a subject attended with much difficulty thoroughly to explain.
One of the great causes for which the SON of God was manifested, was, that he might destroy the works of the Devil. 1Jn_3:8

And if we take the whole purport of scripture on this point, one mass of particulars, we shall be led to conclude, that the quarrel between CHRIST and the devil was personal Jud_1:6; Rev_12:7-9.

Now when CHRIST came upon earth, the conflict was with this accursed enemy. Hence CHRIST combated personally with Satan; when he began his temptations, and afterwards at the cross. Heb_2:14.

He doth this also, when in his people He enables His redeemed to resist him, and at length brings Satan under their feet. Jas_4:7; Rom_16:20.

And there is another triumph, Scripture seems to intimate, which the Son of God will have over Satan, before the day of judgment; namely, when Satan is to be shut up, and restrained from his cursed temptations over the LORD’S people. Rev_20:1-3. Poor Man’s Commentary -Robert Hawker

Mat 4:5  Then the Devil took Him to the Holy City and caused Him to stand on the roof of the Temple,
Cast yourself down!
Barnes :Then the devil taketh him up - This does not mean that he bore him through the air; or that he compelled him to go against his will, or that he performed a miracle in any way to place him there. There is no evidence that Satan had power to do any of these things, and the word translated taketh him Up does not imply any such thing. It means to conduct one; to lead one; to attend or accompany one; or to induce one to go. It is used in the following places in the same sense: Num_23:14; “And he (Balak) brought him (Balaam) into the field of Zophim,” etc. That is, he led him, or induced him to go there. Mat_17:1; “and after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James,” etc.; that is, led or conducted them - not by any means implying that he bore them by force.
and setteth him upon a pinnacle [the roof],  John Gill or "wing of the temple". In this place (d) the Jews set James, the brother of Christ, and from it cast him down headlong: this was the ακρον "the summit", or "top" of it; and intends either the roof encompassed with battlements, to keep persons from falling off; or the top of the porch before the temple, which was 120 cubits high; or the top of the royal gallery, built by Herod, which was of such an height, that if a man looked down from it, he soon became dizzy (e). The view Satan had in setting him here appears in the next verse.
Situation has a lot to do with Temptations of Satan. Notice here :the roof of the temple, the temptation before, “the wilderness of Judea”; the next one, on the top of an exceedingly high mountain.
Don’t put yourself unwittingly in situations of Trial and Testing.
The Second Temptation itself.
Mat 4:6  and said, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down; for it is written, "'TO HIS ANGELS HE WILL GIVE ORDERS CONCERNING THEE, AND ON THEIR HANDS THEY SHALL BEAR THEE UP, LEST AT ANY MOMENT THOU SHOULDST STRIKE THY FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"
"If you are God's Son, throw yourself down;
RWP “Cast thyself down (bale seauton katō). The appeal to hurl himself down into the abyss below would intensify the nervous dread that most people feel at such a height. The devil urged presumptuous reliance on God and quotes Scripture to support his view (Psa_91:11.).

So the devil quotes the Word of God, misinterprets it, omits a clause, and tries to trip the Son of God by the Word of God. It was a skilful thrust and would also be accepted by the populace as proof that Jesus was the Messiah if they should see him sailing down as if from heaven. This would be a sign from heaven in accord with popular Messianic expectation. The promise of the angels the devil thought would reassure Jesus. They would be a spiritual parachute for Christ.”
Scripture says, 'He will put his angels in charge of you. They will carry you in their hands so that you never hit your foot against a rock.'"

Mat 4:7  "Again it is written," replied Jesus, "'THOU SHALT NOT PUT THE LORD THY GOD TO THE PROOF.'"

Jesus Reply to Satan.

Even though the devil had quoted the Scripture in his temptation he still could not deceive Jesus. The Lord still used Scripture to overcome Him.
Deu 6:16  You shall not tempt Jehovah your God as you tempted in Massah.MKJV
Deu 6:16  Never test the LORD your God as you did at Massah. GW

Thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God - This is quoted literally from Deu_6:16. The meaning is, thou shalt not try him; or, thou shalt not, by throwing thyself into voluntary and uncommanded dangers, appeal to God for protection, or trifle with the promises made to those who are thrown into danger by his providence. It is true, indeed, that God aids those of his people who are placed by him in trial or danger; but it is not true that the promise was meant to extend to those who wantonly provoke him and trifle with the promised help. Thus, Satan, artfully using and perverting Scripture, was met and repelled by Scripture rightly applied.Barnes

Matthew 4:1-11 The Temptations of Jesus.

The devil tries to seduce everyone of us. He did it to Eve in the Garden  when he tempted her to doubt the Truth of what God had told them. and He is still at it today. He says “oh. it’s all right, mate. Everyone is doing it. Or, no one will see you. Its OK. Or, that stuff’s old hat. Nobody follows that anymore. Guess what he is still up to his same dirty tricks today and i trust that you will learn something from what jesus went through. Hebrews 4:15 says, “ For we do not have a High priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses., but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin.

Jesus knows and feels with us as He has experienced just what you are going through.

Mat 4:1  At that time Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the Desert in order to be tempted by the Devil.
Mat 4:2  There He fasted for forty days and nights; and after that He suffered from hunger.

Right after his Baptism, “At that time…..” When you have made a commitment and are following Jesus to fulfill all righteousness i.e. to live a godly life then expect the Devil to soon come to hound you and tempt you.
Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the Desert in order to be tempted by the Devil.
Jesus whole life was lived in the power of the Holy Spirit and surrendered to His Divine Leading. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will allow us to go through difficult situations and trying moments so that we will lead how to handle the word of God and defeat the Devil right where he tries us.

What a shocking place where the Devil tempted him. The desert of Judea.
Judean Desert
Jesus was here showing us how to act when the Devil is attacking us and how to win the victory in the nitty-gritty of the hour of temptation which we all experience.

Temptation G3985 Strong’’s πειράζω  peirazō  pi-rad'-zo
From G3984; to test (objectively), that is, endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline: - assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt (-er), try.
The word “tempt,” in the original, means to try, to endeavor, to attempt to do a thing; then, to try the nature of a thing, as metals by fire; then, to test moral qualities by trying them, to see how they will endure; then, to endeavor to draw people away from virtue by suggesting motives to evil. This is the meaning here, and this is now the established sense of the word in the English language. Barnes

The Devil is the Tempter

This is his number one plan to stumble humanity and cause us to come under his authority. He tries us as to the genuineness of our Faith and obedience to the Word of God. He hates God and His Word so he does all he can to disrupt and subvert every blessing and purpose of God for our lives.Eph 6:11  Put on the complete armour of God, so as to be able to stand firm against all the stratagems of the Devil.
[wiles of the Devil] μεθοδεία methodeia
Thayer Definition: 1) cunning arts, deceit, craft, trickery

Barnes The word rendered “wiles” (μεθοδεία  methodeia), means properly that which is traced out with “method;” that which is “methodized;” and then that which is well laid - art, skill, cunning. It occurs in the New Testament only in Eph_4:14, and in this place. It is appropriately rendered here as “wiles,” meaning cunning devices, arts, attempts to delude and destroy us. The wiles “of the devil” are the various arts and stratagems which he employs to drag souls down to perdition. We can more easily encounter open force than we can cunning; and we need the weapons of Christian armour to meet the attempts to draw us into a snare, as much as to meet open force. The idea here is, that Satan does not carry on an open warfare. He does not meet the Christian soldier face to face. He advances covertly; makes his approaches in darkness; employs cunning rather than power, and seeks rather to delude and betray than to vanquish by mere force. Hence, the necessity of being constantly armed to meet him whenever the attack is made. A man who has to contend with a visible enemy, may feel safe if he only prepares to meet him in the open field. But far different is the case if the enemy is invisible; if he steals upon us slyly and stealthily; if he practices war only by ambushes and by surprises. Such is the foe that we have to contend with - and almost all the Christian struggle is a warfare against stratagems and wiles. Satan does not openly appear. He approaches us not in repulsive forms, but comes to recommend some plausible doctrine, to lay before us some temptation that shall not immediately repel us. He presents the world in an alluring aspect; invites us to pleasures that seem to be harmless, and leads us in indulgence until we have gone so far that we cannot retreat.

Eph 6:12  For ours is not a conflict with mere flesh and blood, but with the despotisms, the empires, the forces that control and govern this dark world--the spiritual hosts of evil arrayed against us in the heavenly warfare.

The First Temptation : For Jesus To prove His Divinity by working a miracle

Mat 4:3  So the Tempter came and said, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into loaves."
Notes: For us we do not see the real significance or power of this temptation because we eat daily and are rarely hungry like millions in third world countries who go hungry every day and are never really satisfied. Many millions of people struggle to put food on the table every day and do not know where their next meal is coming from.
www.causes.com/campaigns/56551-african-children-hunger-no-more

Jesus was hungry. He had been in the desert without eating for forty days and forty nights. It was not a Ramadan type of fast where they eat all they want and more every evening. When Jesus was at His weakest Satan came to tempt Him. So with us when we are tired and exhausted he will come and try to get us to resolve the situation of hunger or loneliness or the need of love in a wrong way. Watch out for the schemes of the Devil. Don’t just think that because you are a Christian you can do whatever you want to whenever you want to.
Jesus answer to Satan.
Mat 4:4  "It is written," replied Jesus, "'IT IS NOT ON BREAD ALONE THAT A MAN SHALL LIVE, BUT ON WHATSOEVER GOD SHALL APPOINT.'"
Mat 4:4  But He answered and said, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."
Jesus quoted the OT from Deuteronomy 8:3 to defeat the Devil. Jesus is showing us that we must know and use the Word of God and the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God in these situations of Temptation.
Do you know the Word of God sufficiently to use it against Satan. Memorize it especially while you are young.
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."

It is the Word of God that should prescribe the boundaries of our living. We are not to be hearers only but DOERS of God’s Word.

It is better to be hungry or fasting and doing the Will of God than to be full of the best food and living contrary to God’s Word, His Revealed Will for our Lives.
Mat 4:4  "It is written," replied Jesus, "'IT IS NOT ON BREAD ALONE THAT A MAN SHALL LIVE, BUT ON WHATSOEVER GOD SHALL APPOINT.'"
